  • Being no great fan of the vinyl format, I was rather pleased to see they had sent me the CD version, which incidently includes one extra track. This is their second album - the first being "Dog's Head".The opening track is "Time Didn't Break My Wings", which puts me in mind of pre-"Joshua Tree" U2 coupled with a rather palatable Rock structure. The vocalist really sounds like BONO on this one. The song has a warm dense sustain absent in most Heavy Metal. "We Are Still Alive" comes next, nodding, for the first time of many times, towards both GODFLESH & more traditional SABS-type music. It's businesslike & efficient without being excessively showy - lots of direction changes but no wasteful fireworks. "Blind" moves much closer towards GODFLESH, having the same thick, stodgy bass/drums surge over which the guitars surf (and feedback!), while managing to lean towards a more traditional Rock structure. "Dig A Hole In The Sky" churns along in a thick tsunami of warm but lethal Rock. This one could stand up as a single (maybe) - a grinding coasting track. "Maze Man (1)" again spans the distance between Trad & Industrial Rock - it has a chord arrangement that would make any long-haired, long-bearded Godfather nod with pleasure to it's medium-slow pace. And yet there's an attitude which makes it really listenable - the sudden stops remind one a little of THE SWANS at their more Rocky. "My Brain Sucks" has what sounds like a Bassline (electronic bass sequencer) giving the rhythm a snarly sawtooth sound like a gently boiling stew of Primeordial goo. There's a certain Punkiness to this one and the arrangement brings to mind ELVIS COSTELLO's "Pump It Up" fed through some radical noise processors. "Maze Man (2)" again leans towards the New Wave arena with a track sounding simplistically complex, again with GODFLESH leanings. "All My Dreams Fly Higher" again leans towards the sound of our friends beginning with a 'G' - a decent track with some breakneck stops & starts. "C'mon Sister" is a thick & grungy thing without growing too dense. It reminds me a little of the DEAD KENNEDYS' "Holiday In Cambodia" - that kind of heavy, driving music with catchy lyrics. "The Man Behind His Shadow" is another physically luring track, medium-paced though it is you find yourself moving to the bludgeon bass which seems to be digging holes with a cold & continual determination. The album closes with "Dig My Grave", opening mildly on guitar nix effects, it grows into a sleek killer of a track, with a linear shape which you can only admire, although you know that it belongs to the cruising shark that could at any moment chow down on your vitals. That wasn't an easy review - I'm sure it was quite inaccurate, but then I know little of the Rock scene. Before deciding one way or the other, I'd send a blank tape & return postage to WIDE & ask them to send you a sample of this, plus PEGGIO, GRONGE & TRANSMISIA also. All are recommended, but they dangle closer to the Rock camp than to Industrial. Judge for yourself.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
