Fabulous, wonderful, well-crafted compilation of sea chantries, great performances all, with interstitial maritime sound effects. I was a sailor on The Golden Hinde when a friend lent this record to me, in Redwood City, CA, in 1987, and I couldn't have wished for a better soundtrack to my stint on a square-rigged sailing ship. (Although the gig was mostly giving tours, around the San Francisco Bay.) As a University of Michigan School of Music, Music History and Musicology graduate, I also give this recording high marks for authenticity and performance quality. It makes a great historical reanactment resource, as well as working as a concept piece for those wanting just wanting a bit of musical escape. It's a crying shame that this recording has never been re-released digitally, as it's just about the best sea shanty albumn ever made.
